Vintage meets modern in this fabulous crochet round bag pattern. This stylish and functional granny circle bag is perfect for summer. Prepare to get a ton of compliments every time you wear it! I chose to use Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran for this design because of the wide color selection and the longevity of cotton yarn. You can really use any kind of yarn for this project, though – including scrap yarn!
I have included instructions for 3 different strap lengths depending on the height of the wearer, so you can be sure that it’s going to be a great fit. I love a good crossbody crochet bag pattern because I don’t have to worry about it slipping off my shoulder. A quirky and colorful handbag is a total fashion statement!
After you make one crochet round bag for yourself and you see how quick and easy it is, you will definitely want to make one for an upcoming birthday or special occasion like Mother’s Day. (Y’all know that Mother’s Day is May 9th this year, right? It’s coming up quick!)
This trendy crochet round bag could be the next best seller in your Etsy shop or at your next craft fair. You have my full permission to sell any finished items you make from this crochet bag pattern. A pattern credit or tag is always appreciated. <3 Also, make sure to check out my recent post about trendy Spring and Summer crochet items that sell well for 2021!

Abbreviations
US terminology
ch = chain
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
Gauge
The first two rounds of the circular part of the crochet bag pattern should be approximately 2.5” (6 cm) across.
Notes
- Ch 3 counts as a dc.
- There is no set order to the color changes. Go crazy with color changes or alternate between two colors for a simpler striped design. Scrap yarn is encouraged!
- You can fasten off after every round or carry your yarn up the rows (this can be easily hidden on the inside of the bag).
- I will refer to double crochet stitches worked in the same space as a cluster.
- I used the pi method when planning out the increases in the circle. The stitch count is doubled every time the number of rounds doubles – on the 2nd, 4th and 8th rounds. Your work will likely curl quite a bit on the 3rd and 7th rounds. Keep going and it will straighten out!

Crossbody Strap
Strap length will depend on the height of the person the bag is intended for.
If the person’s height is less than 5’2” (1.57 meters) you will ch 220.
If the person’s height is between 5’2” (1.57 meters) and 5’8” (1.72 meters) you will ch 236.
If the person’s height is greater than 5’8” (1.72 meters) you will ch 257.
Being careful not to twist the chain, sl st to join to the last ch to the first ch to make a big loop.
Tip: You can wait to join to make a loop until after completing the first row. This makes it easier to keep it from twisting. You’ll need to use the starting tail to close up the gap.
Row 1: Ch 3, Dc in the first ch, [sk 1, dc 2 in the next ch] repeat across, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join, drop yarn.
Row 2: Attach your next color of yarn at the top of the last dc. Ch 3, dc in the same space, [dc 2 in between the next 2 clusters], repeat across, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join, drop yarn.
Row 3: Repeat row 2. Fasten off.
Assembly
Grab one of the circles. Place 1 stitch marker (M1 = Marker 1) in any space between clusters. Count 13 clusters away from the first marker and then place another stitch marker (M2 = Marker 2) in between the 13th and 14th clusters.
Wrap the strap around the circle and line up the clusters. Without changing the placement, move each stitch marker so it holds onto both the circle and the strap.
Attach your yarn at M1. You will be working through both the circle and the strap at the same time. Ch 1, sc 2 in the same space between clusters [sc 2 in the next space between clusters] repeat until you sc 2 in M2. Now you will only be working through the strap. Sc 2 in the each space between clusters all the way around the strap until you get back to M1, sl st to the first st to join. Fasten off.
Repeat with the second circle and the opposite side of the strap.
Fasten off and weave in ends. To make a closure, you can sew on a button and attach a small button loop made of chain stitches or you can sew on a zipper. Or just leave it open!
