Crochet Shawlette Pattern Free
Materials
- DK, size 3, light weight yarn (sample shown in Universal Yarn Bamboo Pop – Black)
- 4 mm hook
Finished Measurements
17” tall x 35” wide (43 x 89 cm)
Yardage
315 yards (288 meters)
Abbreviations – US Terminology
ch = chain, st = stitch, sk = skip, sp = space, dc = double crochet
Notes
I recommend using linked double crochet stitches for your solid blocks to create the clearest filet crochet image.
2 chains are used on the beginning and ending squares to make these hollow squares more obvious in the finished project. When worked with 1 chain the lace effect tended to get lost.
Getting Started with the Crochet Shawlette Pattern Free
Row 1: Ch 5 (counts as a dc and ch 2 here and throughout), dc in the 5th ch from the hook, turn.
Row 2: ch 5, dc in the first st, 2 dc in the ch-5 sp, ch 2, dc in the 3rd ch, turn.
Row 3: ch 5, dc in the first st, (dc in the next 2 sts) x 2, 2 dc in the ch-5 sp, ch 2, dc in the 3rd ch, turn.
You may choose to continue by following along with the graph or scroll down to work from either the full written instructions or the filet crochet shorthand for the rest of the rows.
Crochet Shawlette Pattern Free – Graph
The first block of every row is always worked as a ch 5 and a dc in the first st. The last block of every row is always worked with a ch 2 and a dc in the 3rd ch.
Each block represents 2 stitches. White = ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st. Black = dc in the next 2 sts. The gray squares are not part of the design.
- To work white over white: ch 1, skip the ch space, 1 dc in the next dc
- To work black over white: 1 dc in next ch space, 1 dc in the next dc
- To work black over black: 1 dc in the next 2 dc
- To work white over black: ch 1, skip the next dc, 1 dc in the next dc
I had to put the graph sideways to get it to be a decent size, so you’ll need to rotate your screen or printed piece of paper to follow along. Each row is symmetrical, so you may find it easier to only work from right to left or from left to right rather than back and forth. The outcome will be the same.
When you’ve finished with the graph, keep going with solid rows until you are happy with the size of your shawlette. Then do a finishing row of alternating solid and hollow blocks.
Finishing row: ch 5, dc in the first st, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st) repeat across, ch 2, dc in the 3rd ch, fasten off.
Using just over one skein of Univeral Yarn Bamboo Pop, my shawlette ended up with 43 rows including the finishing row.
Crochet Shawlette Pattern Free – Instructions Written Out
Scroll down further to view the instructions in filet crochet shorthand.
Note that due to software limitations, when the instructions say to skip the next stitch, the thing you are skipping could actually be a stitch or a chain space. Similarly, when asked to work into a stitch, you may be working into an actual stitch or into a chain space.
Parentheses are used to group the instructions into filet crochet blocks. For instance, “(dc in the next 2 sts) x 4”, indicates 4 solid blocks.
