A fun combination of vintage and modern, this pattern is a great choice for a baby shower or baby’s first Easter.
This blanket design is loosely modeled after the Mile a Minute stitch work. My pattern works up fast in strips and features a picot border for a nice finishing touch.
I used a combination of Lion Brand Feels Like Butta and Yarn Bee Breathe Deep yarns (from Hobby Lobby). Both of these yarns are extremely soft and easy to work with. I especially love the stitch definition that makes the little lace details and picot border really pop in this pattern.

2 Skeins – Lion Brand Feels Like Butta in Ice
1 Skein – Lion Brand Feels Like Butta in Orange
1 Skein – Yarn Bee Breathe Deep in Sage
(or other Worsted, Medium Weight 4 yarn in the colors of your choice)
5.5 mm hook

Gauge
Row 1: Ch 16, dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and each ch across (14).
Rows 2-8: Ch 2, dc in the same st and each st across. (14)
Your swatch should roughly measure 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm). If not, adjust hook size up or down accordingly.
Notes
The carrots are worked from the bottom up in strips. Each strip contains 4 carrots. You will make 6 strips altogether for a total of 24 carrots. If you would like to make the blanket bigger you can add additional carrots to each strip, make more strips, or both. 🙂
Ch 3 counts as a dc and Ch 4 counts as a tc.
Carrots
For the first carrot in your strip:
*Start with orange*
Ch 7, sl st to form a circle.
Row 1: Ch 3, dc in circle, ch 1, dc 2 in circle, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc 2, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in same dc, dc, ch 1, dc, inc, turn.
Rows 4-5: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, ch 1, dc 3, turn
Row 6: Ch 3, dc in same dc, dc 2, ch 1, dc 2, inc, turn
Rows 7-9 : Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc 2, ch 1, dc 4, turn.
*Switch to green*
Row 10: ch 3, dc in same dc, dc 2, dec over the next 2 dc (skip the ch space), dc 2, inc, turn.
Row 11: ch 3, sk 3 , dc 7 in center st, ch 3, sk 3, sl st in the last st, turn.
Row 12: ch 3, sc in 1st dc, ch 3, sc in 3rd dc, ch 3, sc in 5th dc, ch 3, sc in 7th dc, ch 3, sl st to bottom of turning chain, fasten off.
For each subsequent carrot in your strip:
Switch to orange. Join yarn to the middle ch 3 sp of the green carrot top.
Row 1: Ch 3, dc in ch 3 sp, ch 1, dc 2 in ch 3 sp, turn
Rows 2-12: Repeat rows 2-12 from your first carrot.
Border
*I highly recommend crocheting over your orange and green yarn tails as you work your blue border around your carrot strip. It will save you a lot of time later!*
Turn your strip upside down so the carrot tops face you. Join blue yarn in the ch 7 circle at the bottom of the first carrot you made.
Ch 4, tc 6 in circle.
You will be working along the side of the carrot strip around the first dc of each row (for the carrot body) or around the ch 3 spaces (for the carrot top). Don’t work your stitches into the actual dc but rather into the space between the first and second dc of each row.
*2 dc in the first 2 spaces
2 hdc in the next 3 spaces
2 sc in the next 5 spaces
2 hdc in the next space
2 dc in the next space*
Repeat from * to * until you get to the middle ch 3 sp of the topmost green carrot top.
Work 7 tc in the top ch 3 space.
Working down the other side:
*2 dc in the next space
2 hdc in the next space
2 sc in the next 5 spaces
2 hdc in the next 3 spaces
2 dc in the next 2 spaces*
Repeat from * to * until you get back to where you started.
Sl st to the top of the turning chain
Ch 4, tc in same st, tc inc in each tc.
Dc in each st along the side of the carrot strip.
Tc inc in each tc on the top.
Dc evenly down the other side of the carrot strip.
Finishing
To join, hold two strips together and sl st. Only work through the flo of the strip closest to you and the blo of the strip farther away from you, this will help hide your joining.
To work the picot border, join your blue yarn anywhere along the edge. Ch 1, sc, ch 3, sl st in the same st, *sc 3, ch 3, sl st in the same st* repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the first sc of the round.
Weave in ends. Steam blocking is recommended for best finished quality.
