Food and animals are my two favorite things so it just makes sense to put them together. This amigurumi crochet pattern is part dinosaur and part banana split ice cream sundae. He is made with soft and snuggly chenille yarn and he is a very good size. The pattern uses primarily half double crochet stitches instead of single crochet stitches so it actually works up more quickly than you think!
I’d love to see your versions of the Bananasaurus Split amigurumi – so make sure you tag me if you make one! @nineinspired on IG & Tiktok and @nineinspiredblog on Pinterest and Facebook

Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated. Do not join or turn at the end of a round, just continue onto the next. Use a stitch marker to keep track of what row you are on.
Ice Cream Scoop (Make 3 – 1 pink, 1 brown, 1 green)
Start with a magic circle
Round 1: ch 1, hdc 10 in the magic circle. (10)
Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (20)
Round 3: (2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st) x10. (30)
Rounds 4-8: hdc in each st around.
Round 9: working in the front loops only, 3 dc in each st around, sl st to the top of the first st to join. Fasten off and leave long tails for sewing.
For the green scoop only, embroider little lines all over to resemble chocolate chunks. For the pink scoop only, embroider little strawberry seeds with black. (see pictures below)
Drippy Icing (Make 3 – 1 red, 1 white, 1 brown)
Start with a magic circle
Round 1: ch 1, hdc 10 in the magic circle. (10)
Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (20)
Round 3: (2 dc in the next st, picot, dc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st) x5. (30) Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
You should have a weird little star looking thing like this:
Whipped Cream (Make 2)
Note: Do not work over the starting tail or weave it in until the very end.
With white, magic circle
Round 1: ch 1, hdc 5 in the magic circle. (5)
Round 2: hdc in each st around. (5)
Round 3: 2 hdc in the first st, hdc in the next 5 sts. (6)
Round 4: 2 hdc in each st around. (12)
Round 5: (2 hdc in the first st, hdc in the next 5 sts) x2. (14)
Round 6: (hdc2tog, hdc in the next 5 sts) x2. (12)
Round 7: 2 hdc in each st around. (24)
Round 8: (hdc2tog, hdc in the next 4 sts) x4. (20)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Take your starting tail and tie it together with your ending tail so that your whipped cream blob squishes down a little bit.
The knot should be hidden inside. It’s pretty subtle but I think it helps it look more like an actual blob of whipped cream. Here’s the before and after —>
Cherry (Make 2)
With red, magic circle.
Round 1: hdc 6 in the magic circle. (6)
Round 2: (hdc 2 in the next st, hdc in the next st) x3. (9)
Round 3: hdc2tog x3, leave remaining stitches unworked. Fasten off, stuff cherry, weave the yarn tail in and out around the opening and pull tightly to close the gap. Weave in ends. Leave a little bit of the yarn tail sticking out somewhere about half an inch to serve as the cherry stem.
Tail
With yellow, magic circle
Round 1: hdc 10 in the magic circle. (10)
Round 2: (2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st) x5. (15)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Round 2: 2 hdc in the next 5 sts, hdc in the next 5 sts. (15)
Round 3: (2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next st) x5, hdc in the next 5 sts. (20)
Round 4: (2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 2 sts) x5, hdc in the next 5 sts. (25)

Round 8: (hdc2tog, hdc in the next 2 sts) x5, hdc in the next 5 sts. (20)
Round 9: (hdc2tog, hdc in the next st) x5, hdc in the next 5 sts. (15)
Rounds 10-17: hdc in the next 5 sts, sc in the next 5 sts, hdc in the next 5 sts. (15)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Legs (Make 4)
With yellow, magic circle.
Round 1: hdc 10 in the magic circle. (10)

Bottom of Dish
With white, ch 46.
Row 1: hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. (45)
Row 2: ch 1, hdc across, turn. (45)
Row 3: ch 5, hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 3 chs, hdc across, make 4 foundation hdc sts, turn. (53)
Rows 4-14: ch 1, hdc across, turn.
Row 15: sl st 4, ch 1, hdc across leaving the last 4 sts unworked, turn. (45)
Row 16: hdc across, fasten off. (45)
We’re going to fold the sides up and sew the corners together to form a little dish. Here’s the before and after:
Reattach your white yarn and hdc evenly around the top of your dish shape. You’ll have 45 sts along each long side, and about 12 sts along each short side, do a hdc2tog each time you come to a corner. Sl st to the first st when you get back to where you started. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Top of Dish
With white, ch 46
Row 1: hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. (45)
Rows 2-13: ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. Fasten off and leave an extra long tail for sewing.
Assembly
Step 1: Sew the brown icing to the top of the green ice cream scoop using the brown yarn tail.
Step 2: Sew the white icing to the top of the brown ice cream scoop using the white yarn tail.
Step 3: Sew the red icing to the top of the pink ice cream scoop using the red yarn tail.
Step 4: Firmly stuff the head and sew it to the top of the green ice cream scoop using the yellow yarn tail.
Step 5: Attach a cherry to a whipped cream using the white yarn tail. Lightly stuff the whipped cream and sew it to the top of the brown ice cream scoop also using the white yarn tail.
Step 6: Repeat step 5 for the pink ice cream scoop.
Step 7: Stuff the tail and sew it to the side of the pink ice cream scoop using the yellow yarn tail.
Step 8: Firmly stuff the ice cream scoops and sew them to the top of the dish using the yarn tails from the ice cream scoop. First do the pink and green scoops on either end and then put the brown one in the middle. They will overlap a little bit.
Step 9: Stuff the legs firmly. Use the yellow yarn tails to attach the 4 legs to the bottom of the dish. There will be 2 legs on each of the short sides with about 2 rows in between them. They are very close to the edges of the dish for optimum stability. Here’s a view of the top and the bottom:
You will see that the middle of the dish sags down, that is ok.
Step 10: Put the top of the dish on top of the bottom of the dish. You will need to fold up the sides of the bottom dish to make everything line up. Use the white yarn tail from the top of the dish to begin to connect the two pieces together. When you get ¾ of the way around, stuff the piece and then sew it the rest of the way shut. Do not overstuff. You still want the middle of the dish to hang down a bit. Weave in all your ends and you’re done. (finally!)
