Cat Crochet Free Pattern

The Bubblegum Cat Bed

Inspired by modern puff quilts, this cat crochet free pattern for the Bubblegum Bed is the epitome of feline luxury. Now instead of laying on your latest WIP (and getting their cat hair all over it), your cats can snuggle up in this cozy crochet pet bed made with chunky yarn.

I had a heck of a time getting my cats to use the darn thing, so be patient with your pets when you first introduce them to it! Setting it in a warm sunny place helps out (and bribing them with treats never hurts either lol).

I’d love to see your versions of this cat crochet free pattern for the Bubblegum Bed – so make sure you tag me if you make one! @nineinspired on IG & Tiktok and @nineinspiredblog on Pinterest and Facebook

Finished Bed: 16×16” (41×41 cm)

Gauge

The first two rounds of a puff should be approximately 2 ¼”  (5.5 cm) in diameter.

Yardage

325 yards total: about 15 yards per puff plus about 100 yards for finishing.

Notes

  • Premier Just Chenille Yarn is listed as Super Bulky Weight #6 but it really works up a lot thinner than that. Don’t substitute with blanket yarn unless you want it to be massive.
  • Pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Don’t join at the end of a round, just keep going. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds if needed.

Puff Top (Make 32)

Start with a magic circle, or ch 2 and work into the 2nd ch from the hook.

Round 1: hdc 10 (10)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (20)

Note: You can check your gauge here if you’d like. The first 2 rounds should be about 2.5” across.

Rounds 3-4: hdc in each st around.

Round 5: in front loops only, *hdc in the next st, dc in the next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next st, dc in the next st, hdc in the next st, repeat from * 3 more times.

Now working through both loops, sc in the next st, sl st in the next st, fasten off and weave in ends. You should have a little ice cream cone looking thing.

Puff Bottom (Make 32)

Start with a magic circle, or ch 2 and work into the 2nd ch from the hook.

Round 1: hdc 10 (10)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (20) Sc in the next st, sl st in the next st, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembling the Puffs

The puff bottom should be a nice little circle that fits well in the gap of the puff top. Use the long tail of your puff bottom to sew it to your puff top.

You will be going through both loops of the last round of the puff bottom and the back loops of the puff top.

When you have sewn most of the way around, stuff the puff firmly, and then sew it the rest of the way shut.

Assembling

Lay out your completed puffs as shown. It’s like a 6×6 grid without the corners. Now’s your chance to fiddle with the color placement until you’re satisfied.

Now we’re going to join the puffs together. Hold two puffs together so that the tops of the puffs are facing inwards. Working through the front loops of the puff closest to you and the back loops of the puff furthest from you, sl st across.

Continue to join puffs in this manner until everything is connected. You can do it all in one go if you follow the continuous join method, or fasten off after each row of puffs is joined – whichever you prefer! Then fold up the two puffs at one corner so you can join them together along the one side. Repeat for the other corners.

Finishing

Attach your yarn on the edge of any puff with the top of the work facing you as shown.

Hdc all the way around. Hdc around 8 more times for a total of 9 rounds.

Now we’re going to join this piece to the first sl st ridge on the underside of the bed as shown.

Lightly stuffing as you go, sl st all the way around, working through both that first ridge and the 9th row until they’re completely joined.

Flip it back over and it’s ready for cat naps! (You might want to hide any old shipping boxes though because your cats will almost certainly prefer them over the cat bed that you spent so much time on. Or that’s what my cats do anyway haha!)
