Flying Star Wand – Free Crochet Pattern

Encourage imaginative play with this whimsical wand complete with wings, a star and a crown.  This design was inspired by the super cute cartoon show Star vs the Forces of Evil. If you’re a big Star fan then follow my blog because there’s one more amazing design on the way to complete your kiddo’s cosplay/dress-up set. <3

Time to dip into your yarn ball scraps because this project uses very small amounts of yarn, yay! Feel free to shake up the colors to match your little one’s faves.

Abbreviations

US Terminology

ch = chain

st = stitch

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

inc = increase

dec = decrease

Notes

  • Ch 1 does not count as a sc.
  • When working in rounds, for the bauble and the staff, do not turn after each round.
  • I have staggered the increases for the bauble so it makes more of a circle and less of a hexagon.
  • Parentheses indicate multiple stitches worked into a single stitch.
  • Color Changes: When working the last st of the current color, leave the last two loops on the hook and pull through with the new color.

Round 2: *ch 4, sl st to the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, sk the next st and sl st into the st after that, repeat from * 4 more times.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the star to the bauble.

Round 19: ch 1, *dec over the next 2 sts, repeat from * around. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the hole closed and then weave in ends.

Staff

*The staff is worked in continuous rounds. You may want to use a stitch marker to keep track of the start of each round*

Magic circle

Round 1: with purple, ch 1, sc 6. (6)

Round 2: inc in each st around. (12)

Round 3: sc in each st around (12)

Rounds 4-23: repeat round 3

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the staff to the bauble.

You can stuff the staff with the polyfil stuffing or use an empty toilet paper tube like I did.

I cut the tube lengthwise, rolled it tightly and tucked it into the staff. It saves on stuffing (yay!) and ensures that the staff is very sturdy.

Crown

With yellow, ch 6, sl st to the first ch to make a circle, do not twist the chain.

Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to the first sc. (6)

*Ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st in the next sc, repeat from * around.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the crown to the bauble.

Wings (Make 2)

Row 1: With white, ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 4 sts, turn. (5)

Row 2: ch 1, sc in the first 3 sts, ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 6 sts back to the beginning of the row, turn.

Row 3: ch 1, sc in the first 5 sts, ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 8 sts back to the beginning of the row, do not turn.

Border: ch 1, sc evenly down the first raw edge, sc evenly around the bumpy edges.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the wings to the staff.

And that’s it! Just sew it all together and you’re all done.
