Nine Inspired

This fun purse is a perfect place for your little one to store all their treasures and wishes. It was inspired by the purse that Star Butterfly carries in Star vs the Forces of Evil, which is a fun cartoon about a wayward princess that fights monsters in her spare time.

It is constructed in joined rounds, similar to a granny square.

The pattern could easily be continued for a larger size star, if desired.

Instructions are also given for the eyes and the mouth is simply stitched on. Alternately, you can skip the face and adorn the purse with tassels or fringe or whatever you fancy.

Materials

Worsted, size 4, medium yarn

A teeny tiny amount of white and black yarn for the eyes.

5.5 mm hook

Button – ½ inch (1 cm)

Abbreviations 

US Terminology

ch = chain

st = stitch

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

dc = double crochet

tc = treble crochet

fsc = foundation single crochet

Notes

Ch 3 counts as a dc.

Do not turn after each row. 

You may want to use a stitch marker to keep track of the start of each round.

Parentheses indicate multiple stitches worked into a single stitch. These are used to make the corners. 

Corners in subsequent rounds will always be worked into the treble crochets from the previous rounds, so keep that in mind.

Star (Make 2)

Magic Circle

Round 1: ch 3, dc 9 in circle, sl st to the top of the ch 3.

Round 2: do not ch, sk the first st, (dc 3, tc, dc 3) in the next st, *sk 1, (dc 3, tc, dc 3) in the next st, repeat from * 3 more times, sl st to the top of the ch 3.

Round 3: do not ch, sk the first st, dc in the next 2 stitches, *(dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 2, sk 1, sl st 1**, dc 2, repeat from * 3 more times, (dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 2, sk the last st, sl st to the first dc.

**This diagram shows which stitch you will skip and which stitch you will slip stitch into. Ignore the little bump between these two stitches.

Round 4: do not ch, sk the first st, dc in the next 3 stitches, *(dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 3, sk 1, sl st 1, dc 3, repeat from * 3 more times, (dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 3, sk the last st, sl st to the first dc.

Round 5: do not ch, sk the first st, dc in the next 4 stitches, *(dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 4, sk 1, sl st 1, dc 4, repeat from * 3 more times, (dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 4, sk the last st, sl st to the first dc.

Round 6: do not ch, sk the first st, dc in the next 5 stitches, *(dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 5, sk 1, sl st 1, dc 5, repeat from * 3 more times, (dc 2, tc, dc 2) in the next st, dc 5, sk the last st, sl st to the first dc.

Fasten off.

Eyes

With Black:

Magic circle, ch 1, sc 6 in the circle, sl st to the first sc.

With White:

Ch 2, hdc 2 in each st around, sl st to the first hdc. 

Fasten off, leave long tails for sewing.

Mouth

Stitch on with black yarn.

Strap and Assembly

Hold the stars together with the right sides facing in. Attach your hook in the spot labeled 1. Make sure to put your hook through both loops of each star.

Ch 1, sl st around the star in the direction indicated by the arrow, continuing to work through both loops of each star.

Stop when you get to the corner labeled 3.

Fsc 100, sl st back where you started next to the spot labeled 4. 

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew on a button as shown. No need to make a button hole. It can fit between any two dc stitches.
