Free Crochet Bucket Hat Pattern – Reversible

I know I’m a little late to the bucket hat bandwagon, but I’ve actually had this free crochet bucket hat pattern cooking for a while. Now is as good a time as any to release it with spring right around the corner! This would actually not be a bad hat for winter either because the double thickness makes it warmer. The inside of the hat is a different color from the outside of the hat and it’s very easy to reverse the hat to switch the places of the two colors. It’s kind of like those octopus stuffed animals where they’re happy and then you turn them inside out and they’re grumpy.

The image shows the result of the free crochet bucket hat pattern. It's a blue hat with a pink lining being modeled by a young girl wearing a camoflauge shirt and flashing a peace sign.

Here you can see the bucket hat being modeled by my daughter Echo. I really wanted to design a bucket hat with a straight brim, because I’m just not a fan of the ruffled brim look. (In my opinion, that’s not really a bucket hat. That’s a sun hat!) I’m pretty proud of what I came up with and I hope that you like it too!

Gauge

The first three rounds of the free crochet bucket hat pattern should be approximately 2.25” (5.5 cm) in diameter.

Notes

  • Pattern is worked in continuous rounds. You will not join with a slip stitch at the end of each round. You will just keep going. A stitch marker is used to keep track of your rounds.
  • The increases in the crown section are staggered to make it more circular. If all of the increases are stacked in the same spot then it starts to turn into a polygon with 9 sides.

Child Size – Crown of Hat

Start with a Magic Circle (Check out this article from Littlejohn’s Yarn if you’re unfamiliar)

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc 9 in the loop. Pull on your starting tail to close the magic circle. (9)

Round 2: hdc 2 in each st around (18)

Round 3: *hdc 2 in the next st, hdc in the next st* repeat the starred section around (27)

Check your gauge here. Your circle should be approximately 2.25” (5.5 cm) in diameter. If it is bigger than that, try using a 4 mm hook. If it is smaller than that, try using a 5 mm hook.
