Harry the Scary Spider – FREE Crochet Pattern

I’m one of those people that can’t wait for all things fall like campfires, crunchy leaves and HALLOWEEN! In our house, Halloween isn’t just a one day thing. It’s a 2 month long spooky season from September 1st to October 31st. To kick this year’s festivities into gear, I have designed a quick and cute little spider pattern. Hang it up for decorations or give it to your kiddo to play with!

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

dec = decrease

Special Stitches

Loop Stitch: Wrap the working yarn from front to back over the pointer finger of the hand you hold your yarn with. Insert your hook into the next stitch, grab the yarn from behind your index finger and pull up a loop through the stitch. You now have two loops on your hook. Pull up another loop from the working yarn (not the loop) and pull it through the two loops.

Notes

Unlike most amigurumi, we will be joining and turning at the end of each round.

If you leave a long starting and ending tail you can pull both of the tails up and out through the top of the spider’s head and knot them together to form a loop to hang your spider from.

Instructions

Magic Circle

Round 1: Ch 1, sc 8 in the circle and pull your starting yarn tight to close the circle, sl st to join, turn. (8)

Round 2: Ch 1, loop stitch 2 in each sc around, sl st to join, turn. (16)

Round 3: Ch 1, sc 2 in the first st, sc in the next, [sc 2 in the next st, sc in the next] 7 times, sl st to join, turn. (24)

Round 4: Ch 1, loop stitch 2 in the first st, loop stitch in the next 2 sts, [loop stitch 2 in the next st, loop stitch in the next 2 sts] 7 times, sl st to join, turn. (32)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc 2 in the first st, sc in the next 3 sts, [sc 2 in the next st, sc in the next 3 sts] 7 times, sl st to join, turn. (40)

Round 6: Ch 1, loop stitch in each st around, sl st to join, turn.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join, turn.

Round 8: Ch 1, loop stitch in each st around, sl st to join, turn.

Round 9: Ch 1, sc dec over the first 2 sts, sc in the next 3 sts, [sc dec over the next 2 sts, sc in the next 3 sts] 7 times, sl st to join, turn. (32)

Round 10: Ch 1, [sk 1, loop stitch in the next 2 sts] 8 times, sl st to join, turn. (24)

Round 11: Ch 1, sc dec over the first 2 sts, ch 12, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook sc 11 back down the length of ch sts, sc in the next st, [sc dec over the next 2 sts, ch 12, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook sc 11 back down the length of ch sts, sc in the next st] 7 times, sl st to join, turn. (16*)

*Not counting the ch sts

-Stuff with polyfil now. If you have issues with the stuffing showing through you can use a dark sock or panty hose to line the spider body before adding the stuffing.

Round 12: Ch 1, sc dec over the first st and the next st after the ch sts, [sc dec over the next st and the next st after the length of ch sts] 7 times. Finish off, leaving a long tail. Weave the tail in and out of the last round of stitches and pull tight to close the gap.

Finishing

Cut all your loops and trim the strands to your desired length. Glue the eyes on to your spider. To straighten the legs: pull them out taut and pin them in place with 4 on either side. Brush a bit of glue on to the tops of the legs and spray with water so the glue penetrates the stitches. Leave pinned to dry.

Echo isn’t sure about having Harry sit on her shoulder.
