Mini Witch Hat Advent Calendar
Count down to Halloween with this fun calendar. 13 colorful witch hats hold sweet surprises for little ones who can’t stop asking…”How many more days until Halloween?!?” You can also use this crochet witch hat free pattern to make an adorable little hat for your cat. (Your cat probably won’t like it, but you’ll certainly get a kick out of it! Just bribe them with a treat or two.)
These witch hats work up super quick using double crochet and half double crochet stitches. It’s so fun to play with different color combinations so each hat is unique. A button holds the hats closed so their goodies remain safely inside. This also adds a nice touch to the crochet witch hat free pattern.

These mini hats are also the perfect size for witchy photo shoots with your pets! This is my daughter’s cat Cinnamon modeling the classic all black witch hat. Clearly she’s thrilled lol.

Crochet Witch Hat Free Pattern
Materials
Worsted, size 4, medium weight yarn in 3 colors. I used black, purple and green. You will need about 10 g / 20 yards of yarn per hat. There are 13 total hats.
4 mm hook
13 – size 16 mm buttons
White Puffy Fabric Paint
Candy / Stickers / Other small treats to fill the witch hats.

Abbreviations
US Terminology
ch = chain
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
inc = increase
Notes
Starting chains: The starting chain stitches do not count as a stitch.
Color Changes: When you have 2 loops on your hook from the last dc of the current color, draw up a loop from the new color to pull through the 2 loops and finish the dc, then proceed to the next stitch with the new color.
We will not be turning at the end of every round.
Gauge
8 sts x 4 rows = 2″ x 2″
Row 1: Ch 10, dc 1 in the 3rd ch from the hook, dc 1 in the next 7 ch, turn. (8)
Row 2: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first st and each st across, turn. (8)
Rows 3-4: Repeat Row 2
Witch Hat
Make a few solid ones in each color and then have fun playing with 2 and 3 color stripes of varying thicknesses. I did 13 but you could totally do 31 if you want.
Start with a magic circle
Round 1: Ch 2, dc 6, sl st to the top of the first dc, pull tightly on the magic circle to close. (6)
Round 2: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first st, inc in the next st, dc 1 in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st, dc 1 in the last st, sl st to the top of the first dc. (8)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first st, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the next 2 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the last st, sl st to the top of the first dc. (12)
Round 4: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first 2 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the next 4 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the last 2 sts, sl st to the top of the first dc. (16)
Round 5: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first 3 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the next 6 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the last 3 sts, sl st to the top of the first dc. (20)
Round 6: Ch 2, dc 1 in the first 4 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the next 8 sts, inc in the next 2 sts, dc 1 in the last 4 sts, sl st to the top of the first dc. (24)
The next round is worked in the front loops only.
Round 7: Ch 1, hdc in the first st, hdc inc in the next st, (hdc in the next st, hdc inc in the next st) 11 times, sl st to the top of the first hdc. (36)
Now we’re back to working through both loops.
Round 8: Ch 1, hdc in the first 2 sts, hdc inc in the next st, (hdc in the next 2 sts, hdc inc in the next st) 11 times, sl st to the top of the first hdc. (48)
Don’t weave in your ends just yet.
Finishing
Pull your starting tail up through the top of the hat. Make a loop the size of 2 fingers and then double knot the tail to secure the loop. Then you can weave in the rest of that tail and your other tails too.
Lay the witch hats flat and use the puffy fabric paint to put on the numbers 1-13. This paint takes forever to dry so be patient and keep out of reach of children and pets!
Sew a button inside of each hat, just above the ridge created by round 7 when we only worked through the front loops. I put my button over the seam because this will be the back of the hat.
The button will go through the front of the hat in between the stitches like the picture below.
Put a small item in each hat for your little one to discover each day of the countdown to Halloween. I used a combination of candy, temporary tattoos and stickers. Have fun with it!
When you button the hat closed the item will be snug inside. Then you’re ready to hang up your hats!
I used 3 different lines to hang my hats with 4 hats on the top line, 5 hats in the middle line and 4 on the bottom line. Just string the hats on each line by their little loops and then tie the ends of your line around thumbtacks or nails to hold them in place on your wall.
