Sally’s Patchwork Pumpkin Amigurumi

Everyone’s favorite Halloween/Christmas movie was the inspiration for this patchwork pumpkin. I used the colors and designs from Sally’s dress to make a colorful patchwork pumpkin. This pumpkin is going to look absolutely perfect on your mantle or front porch, and the best part is that you can keep it up until Christmas!

Abbreviations – US Terminology

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sp = space
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet

Notes

Color Changes: When you have 2 loops on your hook from the last sc of the current color, draw up a loop from the new color to pull through the 2 loops and finish the sc, then proceed to the next stitch with the new color.

I recommend making the little patch first to get a feel for the C2C (corner to corner) moss stitch before jumping into the main body of the pumpkin. This can also be used to check your gauge. The patch should be approximately 2 x 2 in (5 x 5 cm).

Embroidery Details

Start with black

Surface slip stitch along every other row of the first teal section.

Ch 40, fasten off. Use an embroidery needle and yarn to sew this length of chain in a swirl on the large magenta section.

Working in the 2nd yellow section, bring both sides of a short piece of yarn up around a sc stitch, double knot them together. Bring the ends of the yarn back through to the wrong side of the work and double knot again. Repeat this until you have as many black polka dots as you want.

With yellow

Roughly sew your yellow patch onto your pumpkin wherever you would like. You want the stitches to show and look messy!

Assembly

With the wrong side facing out, using any color yarn, stitch the two ends of your rectangle together to form a tube. Keep your needlework close to the surface and do not go all the way through to the right side. That way your stitch work should be invisible. I recommend using the mattress stitch technique for this.

Now you can turn your tube right side out.

Pick which end of your tube you want to be the bottom of your pumpkin. With any color yarn, use the running stitch technique to weave your yarn in and out of your work, go all the way around the circle created by the end of the tube. When you get back to where you started, pull very tightly on your beginning and ending strands to close up the bottom of your pumpkin like a drawstring bag, double knot and weave in your ends.

Add your stuffing through the top of your pumpkin firmly, leaving a half-inch at the top unstuffed. Make a hollow in the middle of your stuffing and add your stick for the stem. Use the running stitch technique in the same way that you did for the bottom of your pumpkin with whatever color you want to be wrapped around the stem. When you pull the two ends tightly, double knot them around your stem. Then wrap them in opposite directions around your stem until you only have a bit of length left. Double knot them together again and tuck your loose ends in underneath the wrapped yarn.

Take a single strand of black yarn and lay the middle of it right next to one side of your stem. Hold tightly to your two ends, turn your pumpkin over, pull the two ends firmly and double knot underneath your pumpkin. Repeat this process two more times so your pumpkin is divided into 6 equalish sections. Tuck the loose ends up into your pumpkin to hide them.
