Crochet Cosplay Anime Recap: Hanako-Kun

Last weekend I attended Emerald City Comic Con and I cosplayed as a gender bent version of Hanako-Kun (from Toilet Bound Hanako Kun). I love to do gender bend cosplays as I feel like you have more creative freedom over your costume. Did you know that the original inspiration for the anime show was the Japanese legend of Hanako-Chan the female bathroom ghost? So this female version of the crochet cosplay anime Hanako-Kun is really more true to the original inspiration!

As always, there was a crochet touch to my cosplay for the anime – the floaty spirit orb thingies that follow Hanako-Kun around. Read on as I recap how I made my costume and check out the free pattern for the spirit orbs! I’d love to see your versions of this cosplay – so make sure you tag me if you make one! @nineinspired on IG & Tiktok and @nineinspiredblog on Pinterest and Facebook.

My Crochet Cosplay Anime Recap

I’ll give you a quick rundown of the components of my cosplay from head to toe!

  • For the hat, I made it myself out of EVA foam following the Peaked Hat pattern by Kamui Cosplay. This was my first time making something like this and my first time working with EVA foam. Next time I will definitely use an exacto knife instead of scissors to cut out the pieces so I can get the bevels at a better angle. I did try to use foam clay to fill in the gaps but I found it very difficult to work with. I also made the mistake of sealing the project with matte Mod Podge which left it super shiny for some reason and also left lots of brush strokes. I definitely learned a lot for the next time I try to tackle an EVA foam project!
  • For the seal on my face, I drew it myself on a piece of shipping label paper. I would have printed it but my printer was out of ink. I drew two seals and brought the other one with me just in case the stickiness of the first one faded throughout the day, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I didn’t need the back-up.
  • For the jacket, I used a black military style jacket from Shein as a base. I couldn’t find it again to link it here for you, so I think it might be sold out. I used rub n buff to change the buttons from silver to gold. Then I sewed white bias tape around the collar and red bias tape around the bottom hem.
  • For the undershirt, I wore a plain white button up collared shirt, also from Shein.
  • For the skirt, I bought a plain black pleated skirt, also from Shein. I will definitely be wearing these two pieces again, and maybe even the jacket because it honestly fit me so well.
  • For the socks, I got knee high red stockings from Shein.
  • I just wore my normal tennis shoes because I knew that I would be doing a lot of walking around at comic con. If you really want to commit to the cosplay, though, I would suggest black oxfords or mary janes.
  • For the spirit orbs, I crocheted them and safety pinned them to my jacket. You can find the free pattern that I designed for the spirit orbs below.

Convention Highlights

  • My favorite thing to do at any convention is to wander through Artist Alley. This year, I didn’t see any prints that I couldn’t live without but I did get a Puppycat plushie! (Also, my kiddo Echo cosplayed as Joker this year)
  • My second favorite thing to do is to people watch and see everyone else’s cosplays. I was on a mission to find someone cosplaying as Nene and take a photo with them. I got lucky with this amazing Nene cosplay by Griffen._.cosplayz (Just ignore the fact that my eyes are closed lol)
