Octopus Crochet Applique Pattern

This cute embellishment for a blanket or garment is a great use for scrap yarn and works up quick! The octopus crochet applique pattern is worked all in one piece so there is no seaming. Less work for you!

If this octopus looks familiar to you then you must have great taste in kid’s shows. 😉 I like to watch the cartoon Star vs. the Forces of Evil with my 7 year old daughter. It’s one of those rare shows that is entertaining for both kids and adults.

Ready to get started?

Materials

Worsted, size 4, medium yarn:

10 g (~ 22 yards / 20 meters) – Main Color

5 g (~11 yards / 10 meters) – Accent Color

A teeny tiny amount of white yarn for the highlights in the eyes.

5 mm hook

4 mm hook

Finished Measurements

6 x 6 in (15 x 15 cm)

Abbreviations 

US Terminology

ch = chain

st = stitch

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

inc = increase

dec = decrease

blo = back loop only.

Mc = magic circle

dc = double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

Notes

Ch 1 does not count as sc. 

Ch 3 does count as dc.

Turn after each row.

Leave long tails for sewing.

Use the main color tails to attach the applique.

Applique

Main Color and 5 mm hook:

Ch 21

Row 1: Starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, sc 20 (20)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 20 (20)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc 19, inc (21)

Row 4: Ch 1, inc, sc 20 (22)

Row 5: Ch 1, sl st 5, ch 5, starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, sc 22. (22)

Rows 6-8: Ch 1, sc 22 (22)

Row 9: Repeat row 5.

Rows 10-12: Repeat row 6.

Row 13: Ch 1, sl st 5, ch 5, starting with the 2nd ch from the hook sc 20, dec (21)

Row 14: Ch 1, dec, sc 19. (20)

Rows 15-16: Ch 1, sc 20. (20)

Do not fasten off. 

Border

Main Color and 5 mm hook:

Turn your work so the octopus head faces you. 

Work 6 sc around the first leg to the space between the first and second leg. Inc in this space. 

Sc 11 around the second leg to the space between the second and third legs. Inc in this space.

Sc 11 around the third leg to the space between the third and fourth legs. Inc in this space.

Sc 7 up the first side and along the second side of the fourth leg.

Sl st up the right side of the octopus to your starting tail. 

Sc 16 evenly across the top of the octopus.

Sl st down the left side of the octopus and sl st to the first sc of the border. Fasten off.

Note: your octopus legs might look a little wonky now because of the extra stitches we put between the legs but you won’t be able to tell once you have the applique sewn on. 

Accent Color and 4 mm hook:

Sl st evenly around the entire octopus working in the blo. Fasten off.

Eyes (make 2)

Accent Color and 4 mm hook:

Mc

Work everything into the magic circle: ch 3, dc, hdc, sc 2, hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc 2, hdc, sl st to the top of the starting chain. 

Pull your magic circle tight and fasten off. 

Add highlight to eyes with white yarn before attaching. 

Mouth

Accent Color and 4 mm hook:

Ch 9, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook sl st 8, fasten off.
